Harley is our Allergen Alert Service Dog (on the right) trained by Kathy Watters of Nosey Dog Detection Partners to detect and alert to the presence of peanuts, even trace amounts. She was in training for a year before she made it home to us in November 2019. One of my children has a severe peanut allergy and Harley keeps her safe. Every allergy parent is dealing with different allergies and has a different comfort level on eating, package labeling, and the choices they make - there is no right or wrong, only what is best for your family. A service dog is not the right choice for everyone, but it is the right choice for us.
In this blog you will find information on peanut-free products that we love, as well as new finds. You will also see Harley in action, as we often video "maintenance sessions" to review our technique working with her. Don't worry - it's work she loves. To her it's a game and there are lots of treats and hugs!
And lastly, you just might see pictures. Joey, on the left, and Harley light up our lives and we just can't help ourselves!
Thanks for joining us - we hope to be helpful and have some fun too!
I am not a medical professional. My comments, suggestions, and reflections are not intended to take the place of medical advice. Always seek the help of a medical professional before undertaking any diet or lifestyle changes. Harley is a trained animal. She has "off" days, just like humans. Food that you see her check can vary in production - if you see her pass an item here, that does NOT mean that she would pass that same item in your own pantry or elsewhere. You should not use her alerts or passes in making a decision if a food item is safe for your consumption. Always make your decisions based on the advice of your doctors.
